What Is the Difference Between Porcelain and Ceramic?

Many people can’t tell the difference between ceramic and porcelain tiles. Although they are analogous products that are manufactured in a similar way, there are significant distinctions between them.

Ceramics and porcelain are both made with clay, but the mineral and clay composition of porcelain are more varied, and its particles are finer allowing for better compaction and greater firing capacity. Another fabrication difference is the kiln temperature: ceramic is fired between 980 and 1,200 degrees Celsius while porcelain is fired between 1,200 and 1,400 degrees Celsius.

The Advantages of Porcelain

Because of how it is made, porcelain tile is stronger than ceramic. It is also more water-resistant and is usually not simply coloured on its top surface, but the tint is present throughout the paste.

Since porcelain is harder and more durable, it is the material to install in high-traffic areas and rooms with important humidity levels. Use it in the bathroom, kitchen, laundry room, basement and, of course, on shower walls. It is likewise a great choice outdoors, as backyard patio flooring, for example. Another point in its favour is that porcelain comes in a wider range of finishes (smooth, 3D, polished, textured, etc.). It can even be made to imitate the look of fabric, wood and concrete.

The Advantages of Ceramic

While porcelain may seem like an unbeatable option, don’t discount ceramic! It remains an excellent choice when it comes to home renovations. Firstly, it is easier to cut than porcelain. It is also ideal for covering walls. And most importantly: it is often more affordable! Bear in mind, though, that if you decide to install it as flooring, you should buy a higher-grade ceramic and wash it with a damp mop to keep it in good condition.

Current Trends

Whether you choose ceramic or porcelain, both types of tiles follow the same fashions in shapes, colours and styles. For 2021, the top trends are:

·      Oversized tiles, like huge squares of porcelain applied over a wide surface area such as walls.

·      Tone on tone textures to create depth.

·      Cement tile imitations featuring colourful patterns.

·      Neutral hues for a more classic ambiance.

·      For floors, smaller tiles are out and large tiles in realistic textures are in.

·      For bathrooms, all manner of textures, finishes and patterns are being used to liven up the decor!

Both ceramic and porcelain tiles offer good durability and are easy to maintain. This means that what is most likely to sway your choice is how it looks. Which model will catch your eye?
