11 Tips for a Successful Long-Distance Move

Has your employer fully embraced telework and you are now re-evaluating the possibility of moving to another region? Relocating, while usually an exciting adventure, can still a stressful event.

Moving to a different region, city or even neighbourhood is a major life change. You can, however, make the process less hectic by following our 11 stress-reducing tips for a successful long-distance move.

Before the Move

How can you come up with a plan to ensure the experience isn’t disastrous? Follow our suggested list to increase your chances of success.

1. By having a clear idea of what you want, you can undertake your project more effectively. Why do you wish to move? Is this something you’ve been dreaming about for a long time?

2. If you are searching for a new job, update your LinkedIn profile, let your contacts know what kind of employment you are looking for and in which region (or if working remotely is an option).

3. Contact a real estate broker to guide you through the home purchase process. You will need the advice of a professional who is familiar with the area or neighbourhood you want to move to. Brokers are a fountain of information when it comes to finding the best school for your kids, “carless” communities and any other requirements you have regarding your new residence.

4. You can now visit properties virtually. It’s a practical option for finding a home in a location several hours’ drive away! You can then view the homes that appeal to you the most in person.

5. Download the MovingWaldo app or sign up on their website. They offer a 14-step checklist of tasks to accomplish before you move. This easy-to-use quick reference guide will save you quite a few headaches! You can also use this service to modify your address with multiple government agencies in just a few clicks.

6. Hire a reputable moving company. If you can, don’t schedule your moving day on July 1rst to avoid being surcharged.

Once You’ve Landed on the Other Side of the World (or the City Next Door)

Relocating far from our loved ones is one of the most difficult aspects of moving a long distance away. We must build new relationships, and sometimes we may feel like we’ll never meet new people. And yet, it is far more straightforward than you think. Here are some ideas.

7. If you have a dog, go to the nearest dog park. It’s a great place to forge new human—and canine—friendships.

8. Your kids are also wonderful “matchmakers.” Whether it be at the local playground or during school activities, you will get to meet the parents of their own new friends.

9. Search Facebook groups with your new neighbourhood’s name. There are several that may match your needs and interests, such as mom and dad groups, or swap clubs through which you can also meet your neighbours, etc.

10. Try to go out on a neighbourhood excursion every morning. Will you uncover a new alley? Discover your next favourite local coffee joint? Find a pretty view?

11. Take advantage of weekends to travel further around the region. Are there museums offering membership packages you could sign up for? Are there hiking trails to explore? What about nearby restaurants? Does your area host any festivals or events? In the first few months, aim to get a taste of everything your adopted region has to offer.

Moving into a brand-new environment can be stressful for the whole family. Yet, it can be a much more pleasant experience with the assistance of a real estate broker. Let them help you find a place that ticks all your boxes so that in the end all you’ll have to do is unpack your boxes and turn your new house into your dream home.
